obama: well, for 18 months he's been running on this tax plan and now, five weeks before the election, he is saying that is big old idea is nevermind. the fact is that if you are lowering the rates the way you describe, then it is not possible to come up with enough deductions and loopholes that only affect high-income individuals to avoid either raising the deficit or burdening the middle-class. it is not. it is arithmetic. now, governor romney and i do share a deep interest in encouraging small business growth. so at the same time that my tax plan has 30 lower taxes for 98% of families, i also lower taxes for small businesses 18 times. what i want to do is continue to tax rates, the tax cuts we put in place for small businesses and families. but i have said that for incomes over $250,000 a year, that we should go back to the race we had when bill clinton was president, when we created 22 million jobs, what from deficit to surplus and created a whole created a lot of millionaires to boot. the reason this is important is because they doing that we can not only reduce the deficit. we c

>>> the unemployment rate dropped below 8% for the first time in the obama presidency hitting 7.8% for september. but the raw job gains are tepid. will the below 8% news do much to change the economic perceptions of undecided voters in the final weeks before the election? meanwhile a shifted swagger as mitt romney waits to see if his numbers swing up after a decisive debate. he certainly has a spring in his step out on the campaign trail. on the whole 47% comment that never came up at the debate romney says he was wrong. as for the president, he put some mileage between himself and the mile high city with much more fiery talk than anything we heard from him at the actual debate. but is the president's tough talk too little too late? good morning from washington. it's friday, october 5th, 2012. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. we'll have much more on the new jobs numbers in minutes with economist mark zandi, texas senator kay bailey hutchison is here, and an exclusive this morning senior adviser to the president david plouffe. but first right to my first reads of the morning

as i said, of course vice president biden is spending the week at his home. but paul ryan, i would point out, has gone to his home in janisville, wisconsin, fairly frequently as being picked as romney's running mate so he can do this debate prep. but i would say the expectations are much higher for paul ryan going into the debate than they are for joe biden, which, as we know, when expectations are higher, then that candidate can tend to have a bigger problem. so i think joe biden probably will outperform the expectations for him on thursday night. >> well, to both of you, what are paul ryan's strengths and weaknesses going into this debate? >> i think probably his strengths is that he is a fresh face. that gives a lot of opportunity coming into something where you can introduce yourself to the country. and on a big stage, the downside i think for paul vine the inexperience on such a stage. he's really not only been on the national stage debating, but even on a congressional level, he hasn't had a competitive race since his first one in 1996. so i think he's

up next, a debate guru tells us what romney and obama did right and wrong this week and how they need to rethink their strategies. úwñoa >> chris: he has been called the nation's best political debate coach. he prepped george w. bush in 2004. john mccain in 2008 and michele bachmann and then mitt romney in this primary campaign. we asked brett o'donnell to join us today to talk about this week's debate and how both candidates need to recalibrate for the next one. the big i think it is fare to coming out of this debate is what happened to president obama. why did he do so poorly. obviously you were in the room but best guess what do you think his debate team failed to do to prepare him for wednesday night? >> three areas where you have to prepare a candidate. the first s they have to know the issues and policy on both sides. i think president obama s fine in that area. but the last two areas i think his team may have failed. the second is you have to have a strategy going into the debate to execute. and the final thing is you have to be mentally prepared. i don't think the president
